ARTIST STATEMENT
I was a kid who drew and painted. My uncle, Richard Bassett was a painter. I loved my uncle and loved watching him work and the smell of oil paint in his studio. I also loved Joseph LeBeau, who gardened for my grandmother, who lived in Northampton, MA. He just enjoyed making things and made wonderful play machines out of discarded lumber, used nails, popsicle sticks, and old paint. He gave these toys, some very big, to all the neighborhood kids.
I graduated from Harvard College and spent three years in the architecture program at the Harvard Graduate School of Design. Working as a draftsman soon convinced me to do something else. I worked as a carpenter and builder, mostly self-employed, until I retired.
I first thought of working with glass as I looked out a window in a friend’s apartment on West 8th Street in Manhattan. I saw the street. The pavement was full of crushed bits of glass that sparkled in the sun. It was paved not with gold, but with beauty. And what I saw as beautiful was bits of broken bottles.
My art is a response to the world around me and to my awareness of its change during my life. I’m surrounded by affluence and by things. New things in big stores, now almost empty. And discarded old things, many still usable, in the streets. It was so different when I was a child during World War II. Materials were scarce and not wasted. Drinks came in glass bottles that were often re-used. We put the empty milk bottles out and the milk man picked them up. Aluminum was used for weapons and machines, not cans. Scrap metal was saved and collected for the war effort. We had enough food, but there were some things one couldn’t get. Used cooking fat was saved for the war effort. We cleaned our plates. Little was thrown away.
So I grew up at a very different time. We’ve become wasteful. This change is largely a positive change for me. I’m a thrifty person, used to working with my hands, and now I’m surrounded by all sorts of re-usable waste. And I remember Joseph LeBeau. Of course I use this stuff. Of course I make things of recycled materials.

I was first grabbed by art in 1970 when I discovered a reproduction of Edward Hopper’s painting “Gas” in a grade school library book. But it wasn’t until the early ‘90s—more than twenty years later—that a professor in my graphic arts program reintroduced me to Hopper’s work. It was then I decided to study painting. The early influence had it’s effect on me, so much so that The Wall Street Journal ultimately wrote that “Some of Mr. Arsenault’s paintings could pass for works by Edward Hopper.” In November 2014, I moved to Rockport to pursue my dream of owning my own gallery, The Art of David Arsenault, set to open in March 2015 at 26 Bearskin Neck.

I paint and draw nature, landscape and animal themes using acrylics, pencil, charcoal, pastel and ink. After initial studies of Art History and Historic Preservation, and nearly ten years living and working in Japan, I went back to study studio art at Boston’s Museum of Fine Arts School in 2008. Now my interest and studies in American history, landscape architecture, art history, Japan and Buddhism serve as themes and subject matter in my art. I am also interested in the complex relationship between humans and history, with nature and our environment.
I am drawn to the natural world as a source of joy, inspiration and consolation, which I believe speaks beyond language and culture, universally to all of the earth’s living beings. I find constant inspiration as well as in the local culture and natural surroundings of my home north of Boston, where I live with my daughter and husband.

Simply put, I love to make. I’ve been knee-deep in the arts since I was young and always have fun trying out new ideas and working with different materials. With a BA in art, a concentration in painting and a minor in educational studies, making, teaching and learning are what make my artsy heart happy.
Currently, my focus is on sewing and quilting. My most recent collection is inspired by local heritage and nautical details in a mixture of items with natural cotton canvas, bold colors and design. Lighthearted details and playful décor are what I create with the intention of helping others enjoy a happy, handmade home.
I live and create in Gloucester.
