This work, Summer Heat by Pam Stratton, is inspired by Mark Rothko’s ability to evoke emotion through color and simplified form and is featured in “Resonance,” the exhibit described below.
In Summer Heat, layers of encaustic wax and smalti glass explore the relationship between atmosphere, light, and warmth. The luminous orange mosaic band contrasts with soft green-gray fields, suggesting the intensity of a summer horizon. While inspired by Rothko’s meditative color fields, the reflective qualities of glass and the tactile surface of mosaic create a contemporary interpretation of color, texture, and emotional resonance.
