I enjoy finding the essence in what I see and painting it in a simplified way so that it can be experienced directly. The settings are sparse. The colors, modeling, and compositions are reduced. This allows the relationships, between subjects, light, and colors, to sit side by side, to breathe and vibrate. Lately, I do this with people, most often at the beach.

I usually begin work outdoors, composing as I go, beginning with gestures on a color field, and later fleshing out the final piece, which can take from days to months. Pieces having many figures are arranged with intertwined flows. These are various stories being played out. Pieces with one or two figures are, in contrast, portraits. These are typically iconic figures, representing something larger than themselves.

I play with psychology and emotions in the stories. There is humor, pathos, love, friendship, conflict, peace, and mystery. Strong color notes are selected for emphasis within relatively neutral surroundings. Capturing the quality of the day’s natural light is key to the rendering, as it serves to set the time, the season, and the overall tone, unifying the finished statement.
