Helen Retynsky Kamins began formal art training at the age of nine. After graduating with a BFA degree cum laude from the University of Massachusetts in Amherst and studies in London, Ms. Kamins moved to the Boston area and proceeded to advance through the commercial design industry which included the position of Corporate Art Director for a Fortune 500 Company.
Desiring a greater challenge, Kamins studied at M.I.T., Boston University, and Northeastern University in order to learn the newest technologies relating to the visual arts. Becoming a pioneer in the computer graphics field, she traveled extensively from 1983 to 1986 consulting for clients including 3M, Digital, Libby Owens Ford, and General Electric. She then established a production facility in Boston, HR GRAPHICS, Inc., which serviced the video and interactive media industries for over 10 years. Kamins was known for her technical rendering capabilities, and often gravitated towards educational projects. She art directed and illustrated a videotape series of open-heart surgical procedures for the Childrens Hospital in Boston that was distributed worldwide. In 1996, Helen left the graphics industry and returned to her fine arts work.
HR Kamins’ work can be found in private collections in the Boston and New England area as well as New York, Los Angeles, Tokyo, London and France. Ms. Kamins is a cancer survivor. The artist’s studio, ART2000® is located on scenic route 127 just north of Boston, and is open by appointment. Oil portraiture and art instruction available.

I wasn’t born with a camera around my neck, or a cemetery in my backyard. Ten years ago, I was neither a photographer nor taphophile (a passion for, and enjoyment of, cemeteries). My art evolved as a result of the search for my family roots. It was genealogy that brought me to the cemetery. Before the serendipitous discovery of peace & sublime tranquility, my career time was ceremoniously spent in the music business as a musician, manager, and recording engineer in New York City. Nearly 30 years of headbanging assaults on my nerves was bled before retiring in the mid-90’s. From there, it was not too long after that creative inspiration struck a second time. This time, I hoped for greater amity with my spirit. So far, so good….

Photography for me is all about the moment. I’ve always been fascinated by what the camera captures as opposed to what the eye sees. At the same time, I feel my purpose as a photographer is to create images that sometimes ask more questions than they answer. It’s the subtleties that create the mood of an image.
I’m also drawn to the simplicity of nature as a symbolic statement of life, and I try to express this in my work. My series of floral images, which I photograph in complete darkness with small amounts of light, are ones of solitude and isolation, yet they seem to have a mysterious beauty all their own. So often we think of flowers within the context of abundance and color. Perhaps my floral images will allow the viewer to see them from a more intimate perspective.
It was during my first trip to Europe where I discovered the beauty and solitude of night photography. While staying in Venice, I would escape the crowds by going out after midnight, camera and tripod in hand, and walk the narrow streets and bridges throughout the night. This allowed me to capture a more surreal and quieter view of Venice. And I continue my search for nocturnal, moody landscapes to this day . . . or night.
Traditional film and silver gelatin photography has always been the method I prefer for creating my work. I print all of my photographs by hand using archival processes for image permanence and darkroom techniques that I’ve refined over the years. As a fine art photographer, the process of actually making the image can sometimes be as rewarding as the end result.

Combining glass, gold, and silver, Beth creates contemporary elegant jewelry, highlighted by the rainbow of colors and textures inherent in glass. Having been a studio metalsmith for many years prior to focusing on glass, Beth’s designs balance all the elements in her materials, resulting in pieces that the owner can wear with comfort and pleasure. Pure gold granules accent the surface of Beth’s lampworked beads, reflecting her signature style that has been recognized in publications and exhibitions across the country.
“The love of my craft is what inspires me; the way that the colors in glass are transformed by light seems truly magical. The jewelry I make reflects this passion and is reflected from my gardens, the ocean, the marshes, and the ever-changing sky and light of Cape Ann. Handmade multi-colored flameworked glass beads, embellished with tiny 24 karat gold granules, etched to a soft satin finish are then combined with contemporary fine metal beads and wirework to create classic pieces of understated elegance. The resulting work is very tactile, dimensional, invites touching, and is -above all- very wearable.”

Artist statement:
My art is often a collage of whatever stirs me as interesting and challenging. I reach for something not ordinary: art that evokes a sense of wonder, beyond the edge of thought process.
As an artist who expresses ideas visually, I strive to be true to what I see and feel. Some of the beginnings for my work are motivated by inner thoughts, events and emotions. Loved ones, family and friends are a source of inspiration as well.
The artist is a native of Gloucester, MA. Theresa received a BFA from Emmanuel College, Boston, MA, 1984. Her principal focus of fine arts study was Printmaking. Theresa’s professional experience has revolved around graphic design.
Description of work:
In the past, Theresa created monoprints by working with acrylic paints on a zinc plate, drawing and collaging, then rolling the plate through an etching press. Her present art represents a shift from traditional printmaking to digital printmaking. The images are still symbolic of her style, yet she utilizes the computer as a compositional tool to develop the process.
Currently, she is rediscovering acrylic paint again but on canvas in her
most recent work of abstract paintings.
