They’re So Unusual

Find Me on Facebook

I’m a writer and artist, originally from New York. I moved to Gloucester in 2004. My satirical works and poetry have been published in several magazines and on-line, and I’ve won two short play competitions and had my work performed on stage in Sydney, Australia, Wisconsin and New York City. I also write song parodies, and my work has been performed on stage in Austin, Texas. I have nearly completed writing the book and lyrics to a new musical (score being composed by Steve Winstead) being considered for production by The Possum Point Players in Georgeown, Delaware.
My digital art work includes “They’re So Unusual,” a collection of off-beat and cool designs, including re-imaginings of Cape Ann landmarks and traditions. Please visit my online store for this and other interesting and fun designs.

I enjoy finding the essence in what I see and painting it in a simplified way so that it can be experienced directly. The settings are sparse. The colors, modeling, and compositions are reduced. This allows the relationships, between subjects, light, and colors, to sit side by side, to breathe and vibrate. Lately, I do this with people, most often at the beach.
I usually begin work outdoors, composing as I go, beginning with gestures on a color field, and later fleshing out the final piece, which can take from days to months. Pieces having many figures are arranged with intertwined flows. These are various stories being played out. Pieces with one or two figures are, in contrast, portraits. These are typically iconic figures, representing something larger than themselves.
I play with psychology and emotions in the stories. There is humor, pathos, love, friendship, conflict, peace, and mystery. Strong color notes are selected for emphasis within relatively neutral surroundings. Capturing the quality of the day’s natural light is key to the rendering, as it serves to set the time, the season, and the overall tone, unifying the finished statement.

Relatively new to the pottery world, I recently built and opened an in-home studio and gallery in 2013. I enjoy throwing functional pottery, bowls, mugs and platters. In addition to these, I recently have been creating wall pieces – Codfish, Haddock and Redfish – which connect me to my family’s fishing heritage of Gloucester, Italy and Portugal. I have also been making wall crosses which I was inspired to create through my work with a medical mission group helping the poor in the Dominican Republic. My inspiration comes from my family, my friends, and my faith.
There’s an innate desire in every artist to perfect their craft. With me, that comes down to honing my skills for each step: the wheel work, the glazing, the firing. There’s a desire to understand. I am at points surprised, delighted, and disappointed by the process, but I am always trying to improve. Please visit my Facebook page and let me know what you think!

I am an artist living in Gloucester, MA. My work is inspired by the sea and the natural forms around me.
I make colograph printing plates out of seaweed, grasses and other vegetation and print them on hand dyed silk. I love how the movement of the silk brings life back to the forms I’ve printed.
My scarves are one of a kind. They are awash in color and pattern and come in several sizes. They are made from silk charmeuse, crepe de chine and chiffon.
My wall pieces are created by a process like alchemy where I collect flotsam and jetsam from a specific site, return to my studio, and use the objects to print the landscape they came from.
I use rocks, wood, plant material, metal, shells, seaweed, etc. Anything that catches my eye.
The wallhangings are hung on hand crafted wooden supports that mount onto the wall.
My work is an ongoing exploration of the patterns of nature around me, and the colors that fill my head.I am an artist living in Gloucester, MA. My work is inspired by the sea and the natural forms around me.
