E.J. is an ex-corporate risk manager who has been following her spiritual and creative paths since 1990, when she first moved from Boston to the North Shore. There she began painting landscapes and portraits, and became involved with the Newburyport Art Association. Her path led her from Newburyport to Jamaica, where she spent four years painting and living in the country ghetto of Little Bay with her Rastafarian husband, Prophet. From there she moved to Key Largo, FL where she and her second husband, spoken word poet, Joda Khan, operated Jah Works Gallery and Cultural Exchange Center. When she returned to Massachusetts in 2003, she settled in East Boston where she opened Khan Studio, a gallery, frame shop and fine art printing studio. During this time she also founded and directed 80 Border Street Cultural Exchange Center, a non-profit center for visual and performing arts.
In the fall of 2010, she moved to Gloucester, returning once again to the North Shore where her creative path had begun 20 years earlier.
E.J. is a painter, photographer, writer, web and graphic designer, printer and framer by trade; and a lover of art in all its shapes, forms and disciplines by nature. She is a regular contributor to popular North Shore blog, Good Morning Gloucester.

Lisa Courtney

Lisa Courtney Art

Lisa Courtney is known for her vivid contemporary paintings, her use of luscious, rich hues and the joyfulness which she brings to landscapes, architectural images and objects. With bold and lively brushstrokes and an unlimited palette, Lisa intuitively captures the light and evokes a mood in her work. More than one patron has shared “I would love to live in a Lisa Courtney painting.”
Her bold, colorful paintings have garnered praise and been showcased in galleries, featured at juried art shows, and purchased for corporate and private collections.
Lisa’s recent work is inspired by the landscape and seascapes of New England. The mood of her paintings
are generally vibrant, joyful, colorful and airy. Her dramatic landscapes, boats and beach cottages are full of abstract shape and color, graphically representing clouds, trees, rivers, fields, marshes, and open grassland.
Artistic influences include Hockney, Hopper, Wolf Khan, the Fauves, and Fairfield Porter. A Native New Englander, Lisa studied at the Art Institute of Boston. Paintings can be found in both corporate and private collections throughout the US and Europe. She began painting at the age of 31 and has been in many group
and solo exhibitions. She currently lives and works north of Boston. Represented by McKenna Gallery, Rocky Neck and Pop Gallery, Gloucester.
It’s no coincidence that Lisa’s fine art is imbued with a strong design sense. Lisa has spent almost two decades winning awards as an art director and designer for an impressive roster of Fortune 500 clients and top ad agencies. But painting has always been in her DNA. Lisa is the third-generation in a family of accomplished painters. Her great-grand father, New York City artist Curtis Sisco, was known for his distinctive figurative paintings of celebrities including Sammy Snead and Benny Goodman. And her grandmother, Virginia Neer, was known throughout New England as an accomplished and well-loved painter.
In her own words:
“I just love color. My paintings are a response to the soul of what I see. I immerse myself in my surroundings and literally float on a sea of color. As I move the brush, the color works through me and transforms me. This is my visual dialogue.
I am but a channel . I search for that certain something that takes me from the everyday and transports me to some other place. This dreamlike place seems somehow familiar yet undefinable. My great desire is to bring joy to the viewer through the exploration of bold, vivid colors and simplified forms….
to remind and transport them to a place they remember and love, or would someday like to be.”

Art and craft captured my imagination at an early age- I sawed the center legs off an antique chiffonier to modernize it. Interior design entered the picture with the creation of a 6 room 3-orangecrate dollhouse equipped with furniture crafted from household scraps, the first project of a lengthy career in architectural design, institutional planning and historic preservation. The heady experience of corporate America, the joys and heartaches of rejuvenating historic structures, now fuels the creation of visual memoirs. Architectural salvage finds new life in collage and assemblage. Drawing and print making come together in book arts with original poetry and text.
My studio, a renovated 19th century commercial barn on Cape Ann, welcomes centuries of influence: the playful forms of Stuart Davis, Avery’s bold abstractions, Hartley’s rocks, Calder’s humor, Van Gogh’s inspired line; from Lascaux to Tapies, past nourishes present.
I exhibit work nationally with the Society of Layerists in Multi Media (SLMM), and other venues.

Coco Berkman’s linoleum prints reflect her love of drawing from her own imagination and from images gleaned from literature.
She uses sharp japanese carving tools to cut her drawings from a sheet of linoleum which she then prints with oil based inks onto heavy archival paper, one color at a time, working from the lightest colors to the darkest. An intuitive and improvisational process, each edition of Berkmans’ work takes several weeks to complete.

Formed Martin H. Ray, Landscape Gardener, in 1977.
My interest in naturalistic stonework gradually evolved to structural uses in walls and terracing, then on to carving local granite in sculptural pieces for the landscape that may incorporate stained glass and bronze for bird baths, fountains, lanterns, and other furnishings.
