Virginia Lee Burton: A Sense of Place

December 29, 2012 @ 3:00 pm - 5:00 pm

| Free

Join film Producer/Director Christine Lundberg, President of Red Dory Productions, for a viewing of the award-winning film about the life and art of Virginia Lee Burton. This program is free for members or with admission.

Virginia Lee Burton was a human dynamo. Wife of sculptor and teacher George Demetrios and mother of two, “Jinnee” Demetrios successfully juggled her domestic life and two separate careers; one as a highly successful author and illustrator of children’s books, and a second as founder of the Folly Cove Designers.

The Folly Cove Designers, a group of 45 designer-craftsmen, worked together from 1938 to 1969 creating hand carved linoleum blocks used for printing, primarily on fabric. Burton taught the men and women of the group the basic elements of design and instructed them on how to carve and print. Her high standards and artistic talents inspired the diverse group and resulted in one of the most successful and beloved artist guilds in New England’s history.
