Working in pastel, charcoal, conté crayon and mixed media, and often on a large scale, Barzaghi’s drawings portray the primordial forests and rugged terrain which she encounters each day. After focusing on figurative and narrative imagery for many years, Barzaghi’s recent work concentrates on landscape and specifically the woods and wetlands surrounding her home and studio here in Gloucester. For Barzaghi, it is a landscape of opposites, a place of solitude and shelter and, at the same time, a place of danger and forbiddance. The rich color Barzaghi achieves with pastels and the intricate texture her skillful use of line and mixed media create, invest her works with a unique vibrancy and sense of emotion.
Gabrielle Barzaghi attended the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, and currently is a Senior Lecturer in the Fine Arts Department at Suffolk University. She is a founding member of the Brickbottom Artists’ Building in Somerville and has exhibited her work at the Brickbottom Gallery, the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, the Fuller Museum, the Currier Museum and the DeCordova Museum. Barzaghi has lived and worked on Cape Ann since 1995.
